Indoor Rowing Machine, Concept 2 Indoor Rowing Machine

The indoor rowing machine has become an extremely popular form of indoor exercise because it is not just a muscle building machine but also a total cardiovascular workout. The rower is said to an even workout with roughly 65-75% legs and 25-35% upper body.

The original indoor rowing ergometer (or rowing machine) was designed by a company called concept 2. The concept 2 rowers are still very popular in fitness centers as well as in homes and are pretty much the standard when it comes to training machines for professional rowers.

There are basically four different types of rowing machines for indoor that include the Hydraulic Rowing Machine, flywheel or piston rowers, magnetic resistant rowers and waterrower rowing machines. The price levels vary considerably depending on the build and options available. The cheaper rowing machines tend to not reproduce the actual natural rowing machine stroke. The rowing machines which reproduce the same (rowing in water) stroke build slightly different muscles than that of a non natural stroke, so rowers in training are going to want to spend the extra money. The various rowers are listed below.

The Hydraulic Rowing Machine

This machine seems to be th choice for people living in small spaces and tight on a budget. Hydraulic rowing machines create resistance from the up an down motion is a piston or cylinder. The resistance can be adjusted with almost all models of the hydraulic rower.

The problem with these machines in comparison to the water rower and magnetic rower is that you are not able to pull in a straight line. With the hydraulic rowers you cannot reproduce the the natural stroke of water rowing so the body does not get the same natural leg and arm synchronized movement. this machine therefore is not an option for rowing professional athletes.

The Flywheel or Air Rowing Machines

This machine can reproduce a similar feel to the natural stroke of rowing in water. This rowing machine gets resistance from a flywheel and fan blades. The resistance is achieved by the fan blades moving through the air. The harder and faster you go on the machine the more resistance the flywheel gives.

Magnetic Resistance Rowers

The magnetic rowing machine has a smooth and even stroke which is virtually silent. magnetic rowers gain resistance by a magnetic brake system which makes the resistance completely silent. unlike the flywheel machine there is not resistance or friction so it is excellent for situations where the workout needs to be silent. some machines offer both magnetic and air resistance but are not as common.

The Waterrower Rowing Machine

This machine is the closest you can get to the real thing. The water rower uses a unique patented water flywheel mechanism that was specifically designed to mimic the stroke of water. The resistance from this machine is received by the drag on the water as you stroke back and forth in the tank. The indoor waterrower rowing machine is also silent accept for the quite sound of water moving back and forth.

So why would I want to choose an indoor rowing machine? Home rowing machines allow you to get the same stroke as being in the water without having to be in a boat. They can virtually have the boat inside your home while giving you a complete total body workout at home. Rowing machines allow you give you a cardio vascular workout as well as build your physical fitness. It is a great alternative for professional rowers on rainy days.

The water rowing machine has allowed people to get the feeling of rowing a boat without having to leave the house. With all the technology and options you have to choose from today you can really practically mimic the exact natural feeling of rowing in the water. so for this reason rowing machines have become a staple for indoor exercise enthusiast.
